American international Jozy Altidore has finally opened his account in the English Premier League. The Hull City forward found the back of the net after 31 minutes in his club’s shock 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, breaking an over year-long drought since he last scored a goal (November 2008 with Villarreal). He only recently returned to the field after being granted leave on compassionate grounds because of the Haiti earthquake which affected many in Altidore’s family; he now wears a wristband in honor of the Haitian people, which he kissed in celebration after scoring.“It felt good, but I think the best part about it was that we got three points tonight and I think it was well-worked and well-deserved,” said Altidore in a post-match interview. “It was a good move from the whole team; I think the whole play was brilliant and I think we’ve showed signs of improving and creating more opportunities – quality opportunities – for each other.
“It’s just not easy playing in the Premier League, especially when you’re one of the bottom-feeders. Every game’s a grind; every game’s a fight. I understood that coming here, but I think the most important thing is that I take these types of lessons on with me and hopefully it can help me become a better player.
“I definitely feel more comfortable [in the Premier League] now. I understand what it takes playing big teams; I understand now what is needed from me and what is asked from me. You definitely don’t understand it until you play the Chelseas, the Man Uniteds, the Arsenals. You get a better understanding after you play those teams and you understand what it takes to become a top player.
“I wear [my wristband] every game; it has a Haitian flag on it and the American flag. It was just really emotional for me because of what’s going on in Haiti. I try to give back in a lot of ways and I hope people are doing the same, so I dedicate the goal to them. Hopefully they can smile to see one of their own doing well.”
The victory was huge for Phil Brown’s men, boosting them out of the relegation zone and into 14th place in the Premier League table. They still have some work to do, however, as they are in the midst of a gaggle of seven clubs separated by just four points, ranging from 13th to 19th position. Still, the win coming on the heels of a draw against EPL powers Chelsea last Tuesday gives the Tigers something to build on as they look to stay up. Their next match comes this Wednesday as Hull travels to Blackburn, looking to continue their march to safety.
