The Houston Dynamo have acquired defensive midfielder Kevin Harmse from Chivas USA in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, the team announced on Thursday afternoon.“He’s coming off an injury and looks to be healthy from all our research,” said Dynamo chief operating officer Chris Canetti. “Part of our objective this year is to add depth in the midfield. This is a trade that takes us in that direction.”
Harmse, 25, played in Norway and Slovakia as well as with the Vancouver Whitecaps before signing with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. Prior to the ’08 season, the Canadian international was traded to Toronto FC in exchange for a fourth-round pick but would last just over a year with the club before requesting a trade back to an American club due to immigration issues with his wife who was expecting at the time. However, he did not feature in any games for Chivas during the second half of last season because of a right knee injury and is now on his way to the Dynamo.
He has represented Canada nine times, including several World Cup Qualifiers, since debuting for his country back in 2007. Harmse was also part of the Canadian U-20 team that participated in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship and played for the U-23 team that failed to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics.
