New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis is set to miss the start of the 2010 MLS season after undergoing successful surgery on Tuesday to repair a left rotator cuff injury that had been hampering him during the latter stages of the '09 season. The four-time MLS All-Star will require 4-6 months of recovery time.“The negative for us is that he’s going to miss some time (next season),” said Revs' vice president of player personnel Michael Burns. “The positive for us is that he’s had the surgery now and that he’s not going to play two games (in 2010) and then be gone for the season.”
Reis, 34, played in 24 games for New England last season, compiling a record of 10-8-6 and posting a career-best GAA of 0.96, good enough for fourth-lowest in the league. He's made a total of 213 appearances in his 12-year career, all but 39 of those while wearing a Revs uniform.
A knee injury and concussion sidelined Reis for a half-dozen games during the '09 season, allowing back-up keeper Brad Knighton to step in for his first professional action. Ironically, the Philadelphia Union selected Knighton in last week's expansion draft, meaning the Revolution will now have to go out and find a new 'keeper in the offseason.
