Friday Morning Notes

* Former New England Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner has formally taken the reins at Championship side Plymouth Argyle after a 4-12-3 start led to the dismissal of Paul Sturrock. The main focus for Steve Nicol's long-time wingman will be to keep the club in England's second division; they currently sit second from bottom, in significant danger of being relegated to League One for next season.

* Interesting stat of the day: 114 players made their MLS debut in 2009. Where did they come from? As always, Climbing the Ladder has the answers.

* Philadelphia Union head coach Peter Nowak sounds an optimistic tone about how the team's roster is shaping up for their inaugural season. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Daily News provides a prospective Union player's first-hand account of the club's recent open tryouts.

* Who needs the David Beckham Academy when you can send your child to the second-annual Ianni Soccer Camp?

* US Soccer Daily notes that, if Landon Donovan joins up with Everton on a January-March loan, he could potentially see action against six of the top seven teams in the English Premier League.
