The field for the 2010 Carolina Challenge Cup has been set and it’s looks a lot like last year’s lineup. In fact, the same four teams will be returning from last season’s tournament – Real Salt Lake, winners of both the 09’ Carolina Challenge Cup and MLS Cup, will again take on DC United, Toronto FC and the host Charleston Battery. The competition will run from March 13-20 at Blackbaud Stadium. It’s interesting to note that in five of the last six years, the winner of the pre-season tournament has gone on to either win MLS Cup or the Supporters Shield.
Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser:
“I think when something like that happens once or twice you can call it a coincidence. But to have it happen five of the last six years, you can start calling it a trend. We try to make the tournament as competitive as possible, bringing in top teams from MLS. We think the field this year is very strong, and to have the defending MLS Cup champions back I think shows you the kind of respect the tournament has with teams from MLS.”
Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis:
“Real Salt Lake looks forward to returning to Charleston for the 2010 Carolina Challenge Cup due to the first-rate manner in which the tournament is run by the Battery and its partners. I truly believe that the winner of the preseason competition has gone on to win five of the last six MLS Cups or Supporters Shields because the Charleston environment breeds all elements of success: quality competition, intense training and camaraderie amongst the team.”
Past winners of the Carolina Challenge Cup:
2009 – Real Salt Lake
2008 – San Jose Earthquakes
2007 – Houston Dynamo
2006 – Houston Dynamo
2005 – San Jose Earthquakes
2004 – Columbus Crew

First rate facility ! The Three Lions Pub IS BRILLIANT! Great Charleston support and fans - HEY MIKEY! The AWESOME RED PATCH BOYS! Traditional rivalry between Charleston and DC ! (Check up on the Coffee Urn that goes to the winner between the 2!) and the great town that is Charleston - full of history and flavor!!! Oh, and Real Salt Lake continues the champion tradition! Great football from a balanced team - you could literally see it coming together last March...sure RSL had some bumps along the way, but they were very impressive last March! and November!
