Onalfo Out, Vermes In For KC

Curt Onalfo was fired by the Kansas City Wizards yesterday, just two days after a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of lowly FC Dallas. Onalfo’s Wizards have been floundering for much of the season, currently on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. With a 27-29-22 record over three seasons in charge, Onalfo has not impressed enough for OnGoal to keep him at the helm.

Though he did have two playoff appearances in his stint, including a conference final appearance two seasons ago, the front office did not see the kind of improvement they wanted in the squad and decided to make a change. The front office stated that Saturday’s embarrassing loss did not have an impact on the decision (but it sure didn’t help Onalfo’s case).

Replacing Onalfo on an interim basis is general manger Peter Vermes. Vermes played three seasons in Kansas City, playing a key part in the Wizards’ championship season in 2000. In addition to his current general manager duties, Vermes has previously served as an assistant for the US U-20 national team.

With 12 games left in their season, the Wizards currently sit 7 points out of an automatic playoff spot.
