Garber Adds Beckerman, Morales To All-Star Team

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber has made his two picks for this year's All-Star Game, and both choices should make the home crowd happy. Real Salt Lake midfielders Javier Morales and Kyle Beckerman were The Don's selections to suit up against Everton at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 29th, ending questions about whether or not he would use one of his picks to add part-time Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham to the roster.

Beckerman, 27, has appeared in 14 games (all starts) for RSL this season, tallying two goals and one assist. His play this season has been good enough to merit a call-up to the US Men's National Team by Bob Bradley for the currently-ongoing Gold Cup. This will be his third-consecutive selection to the MLS All-Star Game, but will be his first chance to participate in the game proper, as his two previous selections were to the All-Star inactive roster.

For Morales, 29, this is most likely a make-up decision from Garber to say 'sorry' for last season; in 2008, the Argentine was by far the most notable All-Star snub, was left off the year-end MLS Best XI and was not named as one of three finalists for the MLS MVP award, despite recording six goals and 15 assists in 29 games and helping RSL reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

His production has been way down this season, with just one goal and four assists to his credit, but Morales' play is back on the upswing as of late - he scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 friendly victory over Club America last week.

What do you think of Garber's selections? Would you have liked to see more-deserving players selected, like an Osvaldo Alonso or a Ricardo Clark? Were there maybe more deserving players on RSL to add, such as Robbie Findley, Yura Movsisyan, Will Johnson or even Clint Mathis?

I like both Beckerman and Morales. Both are quality players and deserve inclusion on an elite team. So not to take anything away from their abilities, but I am pretty sure that Garber put these 2 RSL star players on the All Star team to help fill the stands for the game that will be played at their home pitch at Rio Tinto Stadium. And I hope all the good RSL fans and the others in attendance enjoy it! I wish I was going to be there with you.
