David Beckham Fined By MLS Over Fan Incident

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber has fined Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham $1,000 for his part in an altercation with a fan recently. The fine amounts to 0.015% of the superstar's annual salary, but sends a message that conduct similar to his in last Sunday's 2-2 friendly draw against AC Milan will not be tolerated by the league, no matter the player.

“We support our players interacting with fans, whether it is at clinics, charity events or by high-fiving their supporters in the stands while celebrating a goal,” Garber said. “However, our players should never engage in conduct that can be interpreted as encouraging fans to come out of the stands and onto the field, regardless of the reason."

Jeered by the home crowd at the start of his first game back at the Home Depot Center last Sunday, Beckham ran over to the Galaxy supporters' section at the end of the first half, singling out one of the fans to come down to field level for a face-to-face chat. Though the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star claimed to want a handshake from the fan, video of the incident clearly showed that Beckham was looking for more of a confrontation than a chat, only extending his hand after security had subdued the other party.
