Rookie Update: Week 13

Steve Zakuani (SSFC, 1st overall)
Zakuani played like a #1 draft pick should in Seattle's 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday. He looked extremely dangerous on the left throughout the night and consistently torched 'Quakes defender Chris Leitch with ease. He came off after 77 minutes of superb play, having recorded one shot on goal with three fouls suffered, the stats not nearly telling enough of what kind of evening the youngster enjoyed.

Sam Cronin (TFC, 2nd overall)
A 2008 Hermann Trophy finalist, Sam Cronin scored his first career Major League Soccer goal in Toronto's 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls last Saturday. When Amado Guevara's penalty kick was initially saved by Danny Cepero, Cronin rushed in to knock home the rebound, giving Toronto an early lead in the match. Cronin played all 90 minutes in midfield, committing one foul in the game.

Omar Gonzalez (LA, 3rd overall)
Gonzalez threatened the opposing goal early in LA's dismal 2-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on Saturday night, forcing Nick Rimando into a save six minutes in, but that was the highlight of the night, as the Galaxy's 10-game unbeaten streak was snapped. Gonzalez picked up his third yellow card of the season for a tackle on Yura Movsisyan near the full-time whistle.

Rodney Wallace (DCU, 6th overall)
The Costa Rican-born Wallace had a solid game in D.C.'s 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire, picking up his 13th start of the season and playing all 90 minutes. In addition to taking three shots in the game (two of which were deflected), Wallace also committed two fouls and suffered one that led to a yellow card for Logan Pause.

Chris Pontius (DCU, 7th overall)
Though he didn't score a goal in D.C.'s 2-1 victory over Chicago, Pontius had an extremely good game, starting and playing all 90 minutes. He took two shots and committed two fouls, but suffered five fouls in the game, including one that resulted in a yellow card for John Thorrington. Pontius also drew a controversial penalty kick in the first half when he was taken out by Fire 'keeper Jon Busch inside the box, enabling Jaime Moreno to score the game's first goal from the spot. Busch earned a yellow for his troubles.

Matt Besler (KC, 8th overall)
MLS Daily's own Matt Besler got his 12th start of the season in the Wizards' 3-1 triumph over the visiting New England Revolution on Saturday, playing all 90 minutes. Though Matt's name didn't appear once in the detailed play-by-play, he had a very solid game overall and looked confident with the ball, even pushing up into the attacking third every so often. Michael Lahoud (CHV, 9th overall)
The Wake Forest midfielder started against the Houston Dynamo last Wednesday, playing 60 minutes before making way for Eduardo Lillingston. It was a quiet night for Lahoud, who committed three fouls, suffered only one, and didn't take a single shot in Chivas' 1-0 loss to the Dynamo.

He was an unused substitute in the team's 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew on Sunday.

Kevin Alston (NE, 10th overall)
Alston would probably like to forget last Saturday's game against the Kansas City Wizards; the Revolution defense was torched for three goals in the first half on their way to a miserable 3-1 loss. He suffered one foul, but committed twice as many and also earned a yellow card for a reckless challenge on the Wizards' Herculez Gomez in the 38th minute.

Jeremy Hall (NYRB, 11th overall)
Hall started and played the full game in New York's 2-1 loss to Toronto FC last Saturday. He committed one foul and suffered one foul that resulted in a yellow card to opposing defender Adrian Serioux.

Stefan Frei (TFC, 13th overall)
Frei picked up his fifth win in 13 tries on Saturday in Toronto's 2-1 home win over New York. The Generation adidas 'keeper made five saves in the game and was beaten just once, by former Real Madrid and Barcelona star Albert Celades in the 54th minute. Frei's GAA improved from 1.65 to 1.60 with Saturday's performance.

AJ DeLaGarza (LA, 19th overall)
AJ received his seventh start of the season in place the injured Sean Franklin as the Galaxy dropped a 2-0 result to visiting Real Salt Lake on Saturday. The defender went forward often as the game progressed, and suffered a total of three fouls without committing any of his own.

Graham Zusi (KC, 23rd overall)
Zusi made his fifth appearance of the season in Kansas City's 3-1 win over the New England Revolution, coming on for Jack Jewsbury in the 79th minute. He has seen a total of 169 minutes of action so far in his rookie season.

Quincy Amarikwa (SJ, 32nd overall)
Amarikwa came on in the 81st minute of the Earthquakes' loss to Seattle Sounders FC last Saturday. The UC-Davis product committed one foul and suffered one foul in his short time on the field and didn't have much impact offensively.

Darrius Barnes (NE, 40th overall)
Making his 12th start of the season, Barnes was on the field for all of New England's 3-1 loss to the Kansas City Wizards. He also picked up his second yellow card of the season for a reckless tackle on the Wizards' Claudio Lopez. Not the best of days for the rookie.

Nick Zimmerman (NYRB, 44th overall)
Red Bulls defender/midfielder Nick Zimmerman earned his second straight start and third appearance of the season in New York's 2-1 loss to Toronto FC over the weekend. Despite the team's poor form, Zimmerman has been playing reasonably well, and got forward to take two shots in the game, forcing Stefan Frei into action on one occassion.
