MLS Daily Player Of The Week: Taylor Twellman

New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman has been named the MLS Daily Player of the Week for his two-goal effort in the Revs' 4-0 stomping of the New York Red Bulls on Sunday. The goals were #100 and #101 of Twellman's illustrious career, making him just the fifth MLS player to reach the century mark in the league's history.

Twellman, making just his second appearance since coming back from a head injury that sidelined him for several months, came off the bench at halftime and scored the Revs' third goal in the 57th minute. It was a classic Twellman goal, with the 29-year-old getting up to head a Shalrie Joseph cross past Jon Conway at close range.

"That's the first time the entire team has celebrated a goal," Twellman told MLSnet. "If anything, that will be the highlight of my Revolution career, hands down for me. To have everyone come over, it was pretty [freaking] cool, to be honest. It was the coolest thing I've ever seen. It was awesome."

Twellman becomes the youngest player to reach the 100-goal milestone (29 years, 100 days), beating Jeff Cunningham (31 years, 360 days) by more than 2.5 years.

On a personal note, I'm happy to see Twellman get back on the field; he is one of the league's best talents and a solid role player with the USMNT. For a while, nobody was sure when - or even if - Twellman would be able to return. Several MLS players have had their careers cut short by head injuries, but it's good to see that we likely won't have to add TT's name to that list. His instant return to form is a very good sign for the Revolution, who had sunken to the lower half of the Eastern Conference table in 2009, a place with which they aren't very familiar. Twellman's return instantly makes this team a contender again and one that is fun to watch, as well.
