United Add Roger, Subtract Quavas

D.C. United has signed 33-year-old Brazilian defender Roger to a one-year deal, according to reports.

“I had other possible offers which could be better financially, but I wanted to go to [the United States] with my family,” the player told sports daily Lance. “I’m investing in my future and in the future of my family. I want to end my career in the United States.”

Roger, who’s full name is Roger Machado Marques, played for Gremio from 1994-2003, helping them win the Brazilian title in 1996 and finish as runners-up in the 1995 Copa Libertadores. Following his time with Imortal Tricolor, Roger played abroad for two years with Japanese side Vissel Kobe before returning to Brazil with Fluminense, where he has spent the last three years.

In other United news, midfielder Quavas Kirk (pictured) has not been invited to preseason training camp with the club and will instead by reporting to Seattle for a trial with the expansion Sounders FC.

Kirk, 20, made 10 appearances for D.C. last season (one start), scoring his only goal in United’s 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in August. Chosen 34th-overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by the Los Angeles Galaxy, Kirk has made a total of 43 appearances in his career (16 starts), with one goal and two assists to his credit. He was traded to the nation’s capital before last season in exchange for the rights to now-retired defender Greg Vanney.
