Trading Draft Picks Still An Option

It has been a quiet run-up to the MLS SuperDraft in terms of deals going down thus far, with most of the heavy trading reserved for the actual day of the draft (Thursday, January 15th), but we are now hearing reports that at least one team is trying to arrange a trade with Seattle Sounders FC for the first-overall pick in this year’s draft, while another club is simply trying to get a pick anywhere in the first round.

Toronto FC currently holds the No. 2 and No. 4 picks in the MLS Draft, but that may not be enough for TFC director of soccer Mo Johnston’s liking. According to sources, Toronto is in discussions with the Seattle Sounders about moving up to the No. 1 overall pick. It is unclear just how receptive Seattle is to the idea, but TFC could wind up with the top two picks in the draft. – Soccer By Ives

The Earthquakes are poised to trade for a first-round pick in Thursday’s Major League Soccer college draft. General Manager John Doyle said the team might make a move after he and coach Frank Yallop evaluate players at the MLS combine that ends today in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The Quakes have the 17th and 32nd picks after trading away selections last year. – San Jose Mercury News
