Real Salt Lake has declined the option on striker Fabian Espindola’s contract for 2009, it was reported by Keepin' It Real on Friday, but the club has left the door open on possibly re-signing the Argentine at a lower salary. His 2008 guaranteed compensation was listed as $75,000 on the MLS Players Union website.
“Espindola’s contract was not bought out,” confirmed club GM Garth Lagerway on a conference call. “We couldn’t afford the cap space after buying out [Javier] Morales and [Jamison] Olave’s contracts. We have not ruled out bringing Fabian back, but we’ll look at that in the context of other options that we have. This would likely be an extension of the old loan if we did this.”
Espindola, 23, has made 24 league appearances in his two MLS seasons, scoring seven goals and adding two assists in that time. He gained a certain level of infamy toward the end of the ‘08 campaign, injuring himself by doing a backflip in celebration of a goal against the Los Angeles Galaxy. Shortly after the celebration had begun, the goal was ruled offside and Espindola had earned himself an 8-week vacation with a sprained ankle.
He has vowed to never celebrate that way again.

I thought he fractured his leg doing that, not sprained his ankle?
It was originally thought to be a fracture, but x-rays revealed that it was a severe sprain instead.
