Rapids Shed Four Well-Knowns

The Colorado Rapids kicked off their 2009 pre-season camp on Monday, but several familiar faces will not be returning to the club this year, according to Undercurrent, the team’s official blog: “Some noticeable names missing from this year’s preseason roster are Jose Burciaga Jr., Bouna Coundoul, Facundo Erpen and Tom McManus. Burciaga Jr. and Coundoul are both out of contract, while the Rapids declined to pick up the contract option for the 2009 season for both Erpen and McManus.”

Burciaga, Jr,. 27, made 12 appearances for the club last season (nine starts), after spending the previous seven seasons as a member of the Kansas City Wizards. He has made 127 league appearances and was selected to appear in the MLS All-Star Game in 2006, the defender’s best season statistically, with eight goals and eight assists in 30 appearances. He has a total of 14 goals and 18 assists in his eight-year career. (2008 guaranteed compensation: $82,500)

Coundoul, 26, had been the Rapids’ starting keeper for the past two seasons. The Senegalese international made 52 appearances since joining Colorado in 2005, posting a record of 17-22-12 with a 1.16 GAA. He reportedly rejected a contract extension with the club and is currently searching for a club in Europe to further his career. (2008 guaranteed compensation: $33,000)

Erpen, 25, started 21 games in the Rapids backline last season and came on as a substitute twice. A native of Argentina, Erpen came to Colorado midway through 2007 from D.C. United in exchange for defender Greg Vanney, and has made 87 league appearances in his four years in MLS. (2008 guaranteed compensation: $125,000)

McManus, 27, leaves the club after just one season. In 22 appearances, the Scottish striker scored five goals with two assists last season, but refused to take a cut in pay for the upcoming season, leading to his departure. He recently was quoted as saying he wants to take another crack at the Scottish Premier League, having left Dunfermline Athletic to join Colorado last year. He has also played for Falkirk, Dundee, and Hibernian in his career. (2008 guaranteed compensation: $140,462.50)
