All-MLS Superliga Final Set

The participants in the 2008 Superliga final have been decided. The tournament's second-year final will pit the Houston Dynamo against the New England Revolution in a rematch of the last two MLS Cups - both of which were won by Houston.

The final was set on Wednesday night after the New England Revolution did away with Atlante by a score of 1-0. The game's only goal came in the 30th minute off a set piece as Steve Ralston's service into the box was met squarely by the head of Shalrie Joseph, with the MLS All-Star sending the ball just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.Things took a turn for the worse in the final minutes of the match, with the Mexican side getting chippy as the game got away from them. In all, four Atlante players saw red cards by the time the final whistle blew. Revolution defender Jay Heaps was also sent off for his role in one of the skirmishes, meaning he will miss Tuesday's final.

Houston reached the final by dispatching Pachuca, 2-0, on Tuesday. Goalkeeper Pat Onstad made three quality saves to keep Los Tuzos off the board, and got some help from the assistant referee when a second-half goal was waved off due to offsides.

Both Dynamo goals were scored in the final quarter-hour of play, with Bobby Boswell breaking the scoreless tie in the 77th minute. Dwayne de Rosario's corner kick from the right side found Craig Waibel, who flicked the ball across the face of goal to an open Boswell, allowing the former D.C. United defender to tap in to an open net.Putting a dagger in the game in the 87th minute, Houston's Brian Mullen took on a pair of defenders at the edge of the box, beating both before serving the ball across the box. Standing unmarked at the far post was Corey Ashe, who smoothly headed the ball past Miguel Calero, giving the Dynamo a two-goal win and sending them to the Superliga final.

Blanco Faces Punishment

Chicago Fire midfielder and Mexican legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco has been banned from U.S. Open Cup play for a minimum of two years and fined $7,500. The punishment was handed down on Wednesday by a United States Soccer Federation panel in response to Blanco's actions in an Open Cup quarterfinal match against D.C. United on July 8th.On that night, Blanco was sent off for getting into a physical altercation with United midfielder Clyde Simms in overtime, with Blanco allegedly taking a swipe at the player and possibly poking Simms in the eyes as well. D.C. teammate Marc Burch ran over to break the skirmish up, but also ended up getting physical with Blanco, resulting in Burch's ejection as well.

After being shown the red, Blanco went back to the Chicago bench, instead of the locker rooms as is required. At that point, a United employee who attempted to get Blanco to leave the field was allegedly the victim of a headbutt.

Shortly after the incident, Blanco issued this apology:

"I sincerely regret my inappropriate actions during the game. I disappointed my Fire teammates and coaches, D.C. United players and staff, Major League Soccer, the U.S. Soccer Federation and all our fans. I'm truly sorry."

Ivan Guerrero to D.C. United

D.C. United has acquired some defensive help, trading a partial allocation to the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for Ivan Guerrero. He is due to arrive in Washington today and will be available for selection in United's home game against Kansas City this Saturday.Guerrero, 30, spent 2005-2007 with the Chicago Fire before being selected by San Jose in the 2007 Expansion Draft. He has made 93 league appearances, registering six goals and 17 assists. In 2008, Guerrero has made 14 appearances - 13 starts - and scored the game-winning goal in SJ's victory over the Houston Dynamo in late March.

In addition to league action, Guerrero has been called up by Honduras more than 70 times since receiving his first cap in 1999. He was called up recently for both of the country's World Cup Qualifying matches and was also a member of their squad in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

RSL Pads Western Lead

Toronto FC 1 - Real Salt Lake 2
Real Salt Lake surged four points clear of the rest of the West on Monday night as Robbie Findley netted the tiebreaking goal three minutes from stoppage to lead RSL to a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC in Utah.

Jamison Olave opened the scoring for Real just past an hour, heading home Chris Wingert’s service from the right side after finding himself unmarked at the back post. It was the first career MLS goal for the Colombian defender, coming in his 14th league appearance.

Despite being in control for much of the game, Salt Lake would concede an equalizer in the 84th minute when Olave was whistled for a foul just outside the box. Making the most out of the opportunity, Amado Guevara spun his free kick over the defensive wall and past a diving Nick Rimando to level the score.
Three minutes later, Salt Lake would get the last laugh. Toronto keeper Greg Sutton made many good saves on the night, but would push a Kyle Beckerman shot back into traffic in the middle of the box, where Findley was able to slide and get enough on the ball to beat Sutton, giving RSL a hard-earned victory.

RSL – Jamison Olave 1 (Chris Wingert) 63’
TFC – Amado Guevara 3 (unassisted) 84’
RSL – Robbie Findley 5 (unassisted) 87’

Toronto FC (6-7-4, 22 points) – 5th in East
Real Salt Lake (7-6-6, 27 points) – 1st in West

Guzan Decision Forthcoming

Aston Villa will know on Friday whether or not they will be able to sign young American goalkeeper Brad Guzan, as that's when the Home Office in England will rule on the 23-year-old's work permit.

The English club is likely going through deja vu, having gone through the same situation six months ago when they tried to snap up Guzan in January. This time around, the deal with his former MLS club Chivas USA was rumored to be in the area of $4 million.

"We are hoping for some positive news this time," said Villa head coach Martin O'Neill. "We came close in January. Since then, Brad has played on a few occasions for his country. I think his position has improved but we will wait and see what happens."

Aston Villa has already landed one American goalkeeper this transfer season, signing away Brad Friedel from Blackburn Rovers. Being the more experienced netminder, Friedel is expected to be the starter for the club, but Guzan could still challenge for the spot.

"It's always good to have competition in every position," said Friedel, 37. "I know Brad's a young goalkeeper for the future. He's 23 years of age and hopefully he can get a work permit.

Earthquakes Trade for Alvarez

The San Jose Earthquakes roster overhaul showed no signs of slowing on Monday, as the expansion club acquired midfielder Arturo Alvarez from FC Dallas in exchange for allocation money and a first-round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.
Alvarez, 23, was originally drafted by the Earthquakes back in 2003, and appeared in 26 games for the club in two years, registering two goals and an assist. Prior to the start of the 2005 season, Alvarez was shipped to Dallas along with Richard Mulrooney in a deal for Brad Davis. Spending three-and-a-half seasons in The Big D, Alvarez racked up 11 goals and 11 assists in the regular season and also appeared in two playoff games for the Hoops in 2007.

“Arturo is a dynamic attacking player who should fit in well with our team,” said Earthquakes General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. “He can play both in midfield and at forward so he also has great versatility, which is important for us as we continue to build our team.”

Not content with being resigned to the usual fate of expansion clubs, San Jose has been very active in the transfer market of late, bringing in talented players such as Scott Sealy (Kansas City Wizards), Francisco Lima (Brescia Calcio), and Darren Huckerby (Norwich City).

On the other side of the spectrum, FC Dallas is in danger of losing the core of their team, with striker Kenny Cooper and midfielder Juan Toja – two of the club’s biggest stars – both rumored to be on their way out to overseas destinations.

Cardiff City Swoop for Coop

It's no secret that several European clubs are interested in scooping up FC Dallas' leading scorer Kenny Cooper. Already confirmed, Norwegian club Rosenborg is in the hunt for the former Manchester United reserve player, but news broke over the weekend that Cardiff City of the Championship has also joined the chase for the 6'3" forward.According to reports, both teams have offered Major League Soccer a transfer fee of between $3-4 million, apparently enough to whet the appetite of league officials. FC Dallas has also agreed to up their offer to keep the 23-year-old talent in a Hoops uniform.

Cooper appeared in Thursday's MLS All-Star game, creating several scoring opportunities against Premier League side West Ham. He also showcased his talent over the weekend in league play, scoring twice in a two-minute span - and hitting the crossbar several other times - against the Los Angeles Galaxy in Dallas' 4-0 victory.

"I don't know what my future holds," Cooper said after the game. "I'd rather enjoy our win today."

Returning from Manchester United before the start of the 2006 MLS season, Cooper's debut season saw him score 11 goals in 31 games. He also earned six Goal of the Week nominations, a testament to the quality of his strikes. The following season started out well, with Cooper leading the team in scoring (4 goals in 8 games) before suffering a broken tibia on a hard challenge from the Galaxy's Tyrone Marshall. He would finish 2007 with just four goals.

In 2008, Cooper has been among the league leaders in scoring all season, currently sitting in a tie for second with LA's Edson Buddle. He has posted 11 goals and three assists in 18 games, all starts, and leads the league in shots taken (73) and shots on goal (36), both by wide margins over second place.

MLS Week 17 Roundup

July 23rd:

Houston Dynamo 2 - D.C. United 0
On the third attempt to get this game into the books, both teams would have to wait out a three-hour rain delay and not one but TWO power outages before finishing the match on a flooded surface.

Brian Mullen notched what turned out to be the game-winner in the 20th minute, receiving the ball inside the penalty area and cutting it back to his left to evade Gonzalo Martinez before ripping a shot through traffic and past Zach Wells. Brian Ching would add a second-half insurance goal by heading home a Brad Davis free kick from the left side.

HOU - Brian Mullen 1 (Geoff Cameron) 20'
HOU - Brian Ching 7 (Brad Davis) 78'

HOUSTON DYNAMO (5-4-8, 23 points) - 2nd in West
D.C. UNITED (7-8-1, 22 points) - 4th in East

July 27th:

Los Angeles Galaxy 0 - FC Dallas 4
Sweet revenge... FC Dallas ran circles around David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday afternoon, riding three first-half goals to an easy 4-0 victory in front of a sell-out crowd. Sunday's result was a complete reversal of fortunes from the last time the two teams met in Frisco, with the Galaxy prevailing in the first meeting by a score of 5-1.

Transfer target Kenny Cooper started the scoring spree after a quarter-hour, sneaking his left-footed effort past Steve Cronin for his 10th goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Cooper would secure a brace when Dominic Oduro capitalized on a mistake made by LA's new defensive addition, Eduardo Dominguez. Showing good vision, Oduro unselfishly slotted the ball across the top of the box to Cooper, who easily put it past a helpless Cronin, making the score 2-0.

Oduro would get a goal of his own before halftime, using his speed to chase down a long-ball and break in against the goalkeeper. Croning had no choice but to come off his line, and Oduro had no problem getting around the LA netminder, slotting the ball home for a 3-0 lead.

The fourth and final Dallas goal came courtesy Abe Thompson, whose bending shot from 20 yards out somehow found the upper corner, sending Hoops fans home happy with a 4-0 victory.

FCD - Kenny Cooper 10 (unassisted) 15'
FCD - Kenny Cooper 11 (Dominic Oduro) 17'
FCD - Dominic Oduro 5 (Arturo Alvarez, Kenny Cooper) 36'
FCD - Abe Thompson 3 (Chase Wileman) 89'

LOS ANGELES GALAXY (6-7-5, 23 points) - 3rd in West.
FC DALLAS (5-6-7, 22 points) - 4th in West
------------------------------------------------------------------------
New York Red Bulls 1 - San Jose Earthquakes 1
Darren Huckerby's first MLS goal offset an early defensive mistake for the San Jose Earthquakes, who fought to a 1-1 draw with the visiting New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

Less than five minutes into the match, defender Eric Denton attempted to head a crossed ball back to his goalkeeper. But the pass back had too much mustard on it, sailing over Joe Cannon's head and just under the crossbar giving the Red Bulls an early lead through the own-goal.

In the 13th minute, two of the Earthquakes new pieces combined on the second goal. Recently acquired striker Scott Sealy posted up a defender inside the box with his back toward the goal before turning and ripping a shot at Jon Conway. The New York goalie blocked the initial shot, but was unable to prevent a rebound, allowing Huckerby to swoop in and finish the job, tighening the net to salvage a point.

SJ - Own Goal (Eric Denton) 4'
SJ - Darren Huckerby 1 (unassisted) 13'

NEW YORK RED BULLS (5-6-7, 22 points) - 7th in East.
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (3-9-6, 15 points) - 7th in West.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chicago Fire 0 - Kansas City Wizards 0
The host Kansas City Wizards played the Chicago Fire to a scoreless tie on Sunday, with both clubs' goalkeepers coming up big several times to earn the shutout.

Statistically the best goalkeeper in Major League Soccer at the moment - but apparently not worthy of an All-Star selection, Jon Busch made eight big saves to keep the sheet clean, while his counterpart Kevin Hartman came up with five crucial stops of his own to stymie the potent Fire offense.

CHICAGO FIRE (7-5-5, 26 points) - 3rd in East.
KANSAS CITY WIZARDS (5-5-7, 22 points) - 6th in East.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Columbus Crew 2 - Colorado Rapids 0
Will Hesmer looked unbeatable between the pipes, denying several quality chances by the Colorado Rapids, while goals from Steven Lenhart and Jason Garey powered the visiting Columbus Crew to a 2-0 victory. Though Colorado boasted a 23-5 advantage in shots, Hesmer's 7 saves kept the Rapids off the board.

In the 21st minute, Stefani Miglioranzi slipped a perfectly weighted pass through Colorado's backline, allowing Lenhart to run onto it and beat an unrushing Bouna Coundoul to give Columbus all they would need. In the second half, Hesmer's goal kick was headed forward by Eddie Gaven, directly into the path of Garey, who finished the job by chipping over Coundoul and into the back of the net.

CLB - Steven Lenhart 3 (Stefani Miglioranzi) 21'
CLB - Jason Garey 1 (Eddie Gaven) 75'

COLUMBUS CREW - (9-5-4, 31 points) - 2nd in East.
COLORADO RAPIDS - (6-9-3, 21 points) - 6th in West.

Rumor: Solano to Join LA Galaxy?

Several reports have surfaced linking former Premier League midfielder Nolberto Solano with a move to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Though the MLS club has refused comment, Solano's agent isn't shy about discussing his clients future.

"We've had a dialogue with [Galaxy head coach] Ruud Gullit about Nol and we're hoping his future will be tied up within a week," said Phil Smith, agent for Solano. "Nolberto is open-minded about where he plays, and there is a genuine interest in him from L.A. Galaxy."

At first glance the move would seem curious, as Solano is a right-sided midfielder - the position currently held by David Beckham. Like Beckham, "Nobby" has made a name for himself with his free-kick ability. But unlike #23, Solano has also played at right back in his career, leaving open the possibility that Gullit may be looking to the veteran to reinforce a horrendous Galaxy defense that has surrendered a league-worst 33 goals in 17 games this season.

Solano, 33, spent last season at West Ham United, who were dropped 3-2 by the MLS All-Stars earlier this week. He had two stints at Newcastle United, from 1998 - 2004 and again from 2005 - 2007. Solano has also played for Boca Juniors and Aston Villa, and has been capped 82 times for the Peruvian national team.

According to the London-based News of the World, Portsmouth and at least two other Premiership clubs are interested in acquiring Solano's services.

Nash: Vancouver Franchise By 2011

Phoenix Suns player and soccer fanatic Steve Nash has gone public with his interest in bringing Major League Soccer to the city of Vancouver in the near future. Speaking to reporters during All-Star Game festivities in Toronto, the two-time NBA MVP divulged that he was willing to put a significant amount of money toward making the project happen, though he did not want to be a majority owner.
Vancouver already hosts a USL-1 franchise - the Whitecaps – for which the hoopster’s brother Martin Nash currently suits up. A potential Whitecaps “promotion” to MLS became a real possibility over the past year when it was announced that the USL’s Seattle Sounders franchise would become the league’s 15th team, to begin play in 2009.

"I am really excited to be a part of the Whitecaps organization and play a role in our application to join Major League Soccer," Nash said. "This new partnership is a great fit for me. My passion for soccer and commitment to the community is well aligned with the Whitecaps vision."

MLS expansion has been a hot topic of discussion recently, culminating during All-Star Week with the proclamation from Commission Don Garber that the Board of Governors has approved a plan for inclusion of two more teams for the 2011 season.

“Expansion is being driving by the success we’ve had in Toronto,” said Garber. “It is the blueprint of what we want to see happen throughout the rest of the United States and Canada.

“We understand that [Canada] is passionate about the sport, but that passion is not enough,” he continued. “We need to make sure it makes good business sense here in comparison to adding those teams down in the United States.”

Currently, 14 teams constitute the league, with Seattle to join next year and Philadelphia following in 2010. Several other cities have been repeatedly brought up as potential homes for a future MLS franchise including, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego, a 2nd New York City team, St. Louis, Miami, Portland, and Montreal.

Deal for McBride Reached?

The Chicago Fire and Toronto FC have reportedly agreed to a compromise in the long-running saga over Brian McBride's rights. As part of the reported deal, the Fire would send forward Chad Barrett north of the border in exchange for the rights to sign the former U.S. international.

McBride, now 36, spent the past 4+ seasons playing for English Premier League side Fulham, playing an important role in their successful bid to avoid relegation last season. He made 139 appearances from 2004-2008, scoring 32 times and being named Fulham's 'Player of the Season' following the 2006-07 campaign.

Despite offers from the club to remain in England for atleast one more season, McBride opted to return home, presumably to play for his hometown team in Chicago. But according to MLS rules, Toronto FC holds allocation rights for the player, based on their last-place finish in 2007, meaning some sort of deal would have to be worked out before McBride could suit up for the Fire.

After weeks of negotiations, it appeared a stalemate had been reached, with Fire officials angrily venting in the media that Toronto was asking for too much in exchange for the allocation. That all changed last night at the MLS All-Star Game, when Commissioner Don Garber spilled the beans on a potential resolution between the clubs, saying: ''It got resolved today; we'll announce something tomorrow. Brian McBride will be in our league. It's taken us awhile to come up with a resolution that's fair, but that resolution is complete.''

According to the Chicago Tribune's Luis Arroyave, the deal will also see Chicago part with their first-round SuperDraft pick in 2009 and "future considerations," which will be determined if/when Barrett re-signs with MLS next year.

McBride is currently with the U.S. Olympic team in Hong Kong, added to the squad as one of three "over-age" players, along with Brad Guzan and Michael Parkhurst. Once he signs with the Fire, McBride is expected to play the remainder of this season and all of next season before deciding on his future.

Barrett, 23, is Chicago's leading scorer on the 2008 season, with the four-year veteran racking up five goals and four assists in 16 appearances. He has been with the Fire since being drafted by them as the third overall pick in the 2005 SuperDraft. In his career, he has made 82 league appearances for the club, chipping in with 18 goals.

Sturgis Will Miss Olympics

Real Salt Lake midfielder Nathan Sturgis has left the United States training camp in Palo Alto, CA, and will miss the Olympics after re-aggravating a hamstring injury that his kept him on the sidelines for most of this season. He will be replaced by FC Dallas midfielder Dax McCarty.

Sturgis, 21, had been considered a surprise addition to head coach Peter Nowak's squad when the initial roster was announced earlier this month. The talented midfielder suffered what was classified as a 'hamstring strain' in RSL's 1-0 loss to Toronto FC on April 19th, and was expected to be out for four weeks. Three months later, Sturgis had just started to inch closer to a full return, but now it seems that his recovery has taken an unfortunate step back.

In the weeks leading up to the opening camp, Sturgis was not shy about expressing concern over his health, saying: "It was definitely a bad time to get injured with the Olympics coming up; I definitely would have liked to play more. Fortunately, the coaches have faith that I can still come in and play."

Dax McCarty has taken Sturgis' place on the U.S. roster, joining up with the squad on Thursday morning. He has appeared in 11 games for FC Dallas in 2008 while registering one assist, and also played a role in getting the U.S. into the Olympics, playing in four of the five qualifying games in March.

"I’ve always thought that the Olympics were one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and like many kids, I dreamt of one day playing in such a tournament," said McCarty. "It’s obviously not the ideal way to be called up. You never wish injury upon anyone, but it is still an honor."

The full Olympic squad will face the Ivory Coast on July 30th and Cameroon on August 2nd, their final two games before the Olympic competition begins. In Beijing, the U.S. has been drawn into tough Group B and will have to face Japan (08/07), the Netherlands (08/10) and 1996 gold-medalists Nigeria (08/13) in the opening round of the tournament.

Another All-Star Victory

Led by Designated Players David Beckham and Cuauhtemoc Blanco, the MLS All-Stars triumphed over West Ham United on Thursday evening in front of a raucous sell-out crowd at Toronto’s BMO Field. Blanco’s first-half goal and assist earned him MVP honors, while Beckham was not to be outdone by notching an assist of his own.Former MLS MVP Christian Gomez also scored in the first half-for the All-Stars, offsetting a pair of goals in the game by West Ham’s Dean Ashton.

Perhaps the loudest cheers of the night were reserved for the three Canadian players selected for the game: Dwayne de Rosario, Pat Onstad and Jim Brennan. De Rosario played a critical role in the match, earning a second-half penalty kick that would be converted in heart-stopping fashion for the game’s decisive goal.

The MLS All-Stars earned the first chance of the game in the eleventh minute when Kenny Cooper found some space on the left side. Cutting into the middle of the field all alone, the FC Dallas striker ripped a shot toward Robert Green’s net, but the effort skipped just wide of the near post.

Cooper continued to lead the assault on West Ham’s net in the 18th minute. Gathering in a ball that had been cheekily flicked over a defender by former MLS MVP Christian Gomez, Cooper endured some heavy jostling by defender Joe Widdowson before turning and firing wide from the edge of the six-yard box. Though many of the fans in attendance appealed for a penalty kick, no such call would come from referee Mauricio Navarro.

Against the run of play, The Hammers would draw first blood twenty-six minutes into the match as Dean Ashton ran onto a ball that had been headed into space by Carlton Cole. In alone on goal, Ashton fired hard and low past an onrushing Matt Reis, finding the side of the net to open the game’s scoring.

Sixty-five seconds after surrendering a goal, the All-Stars showed some flair in leveling the score. Galaxy superstar David Beckham started the game-tying sequence by finding Blanco in the middle of the field. Using a trademark no-look backheel pass, ‘Temoc slotted the ball into the path of a streaking Gomez, who did not disappoint the crowd, scoring with a wicked blast from close range.

With the game moving past the half-hour mark, the all-MLS side continued to sizzle. A 33rd minute cross from Blanco was met in the box by the head of Cooper, but the league’s fourth-leading scorer was out of position to shoot, nodding his attempt well wide of the far post.

Fans in Toronto were treated to their first Beckham free kick eight minutes before intermission, set up when Blanco was taken down at the top of the box. From 30 yards out, the English midfielder opted to cut the ball inside the wall, targeting the far post, but his shot was headed away by Calum Davenport.

Showing why his salary is second only to Beckham, Blanco propelled MLS into the lead just before the halftime whistle. Using exquisite touch, the Chicago Fire playmaker curled his shot around the opposing goalkeeper and into the net.

Head coach Steve Nicol opted to save two of the league’s brightest offensive talents for later in the match, inserting Landon Donovan and Juan Pablo Angel into the lineup at the start of the second half.

Both sides failed to get off to a quick start in the second half, with the first solid opportunity coming in the 59th minute for West Ham. A Faubert cross from the right side was one-timed by Ashton in the middle of the box, forcing a tremendous save from New England Revolution keeper Matt Reis. It wouldn’t have counted anyway, as the linesman’s flag had gone up before the shot, but the save allowed Reis a chance to showcase his skills once again.

Coming back the other way, Chivas USA left-back Jonathan Bornstein ventured forward and slipped past his defender with the ball before cutting it to Beckham at the top of the box. With nobody around him, Becks laced the ball back across the face of goal, only missing the far corner by inches.

Alan Curbishley’s side would draw level in the 67th minute, again via Ashton. Despite having numbers back in defense, the MLS All-Stars could not stop the striker from unleashing a solid shot that deflected off Wizards captain Jimmy Conrad. As Reis had committed to the side where the shot was struck, there was little he could do to reverse course, watching helplessly as Ashton secured his brace and knotted the game at 2-2.

Bouncing back once more, the MLS All-Stars were awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute when Canadian native Dwayne de Rosario was chopped down in the box by Australian defender Lucas Neill. Stepping up to the spot to reclaim the lead, de Rosario hit his attempt off the crossbar, sending the ball into the ground and kissing the bar once more before finally coming to rest in the West Ham goal.

"It's definitely a dream come true, scoring in a game of this magnitude," said de Rosario. "This game is huge. People don't realize how big this is because this is an opportunity to showcase our talent throughout the world and show them how good this league is."

Aiming for a game-sealing goal seconds later, Juan Pablo Angel appeared to have tallied a fourth goal for MLS, blasting his shot over the diving goalkeeper, only to be denied by an offsides call.

The visiting team would have one final chance to snatch a result in the dying stages of the game. Taking on three defenders, Scott Parker slipped the ball through to Luis Boa Morte, whose left-footed stab from a bad angle came dangerously close to finding the back post before rolling out of play.

The final whistle sounded shortly thereafter, giving the MLS All-Stars their fifth win in five attempts against foreign competition. Tallying a goal and an assist in the first 45 minutes, MVP honors were bestowed upon the Chicago Fire’s Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

"We said we were going to take it seriously and we wanted to win the game, and we did that," said Beckham after the game. "We played together as a team and we won as a team."
