Galaxy Choose Lewis Over Gibbs

The Los Angeles Galaxy look set to use their top spot in the allocation order to lock up left-sided midfielder Eddie Lewis, who is reportedly returning to Major League Soccer after spending the better part of a decade playing in England.

Lewis, 34, most recently played for Derby County during their historically futile 2007-08 season in the English Premier League. He has also had stints at Leeds United, Preston North End and Fulham, but started his career in the United States, playing for Major League Soccer’s San Jose Clash from 1996–1999. He has also been a staple in Bob Bradley’s national team roster, with 80 caps and 10 goals to his credit.

By opting to use their allocation spot on Lewis, the Galaxy took a pass on another returning national team player in defender Cory Gibbs. The former Charlton centerback could now end up going to the Colorado Rapids, who hold the second allocation spot, but he is rumored to prefer a move to the New England Revolution. However, it’s not clear at this point whether the oft-injured Gibbs is even part of Steve Nicol’s plans.

Lewis' service from the left flank will add to an offense that is unrivaled in Major League Soccer. He will also bring leadership to a club that is at the moment in turmoil after the departures of both their general manager Alexi Lalas and head coach Ruud Gullit.
